Newsletter - Testing time in Africa

06-09-2016 / Newsletter - Testing time in Africa

We have completed the trip-up during which we encountered a lot. From brand new four lane highways to bumpy streets. The surroundings will result in an exciting race with beautiful views, steep mountainsides and even bush fires at the roadsides! All shadowy places, difficult intersections and traffic lights are logged into the navigation system, so the Nuon Solar Team is well-prepared and knows what to expect during the race.

Nuna has safely arrived!

Every year it is very nerve-racking as our flightcase arrives to the destination. You never know what might have happened during its trip. Due to our new flightcase the tension fortunately was limited to a minimum. Never the less we were very happy when the flightcase safely arrived and we were able to put Nuna in the Dutch embassy in Pretoria.

First test drive in South Africa

Last Saturday we had our first test drive, on one of the most beautiful sloping racetracks in the world: Gerotek. A part of this sloping racetrack is carved out of the rocks and makes for the perfect scene for our test drives with Nuna. We performed a skid test, also we practiced our convoy protocols for during the race.

Workshop at the Dutch Embassy

The last four weeks before the race the Nuon Solar Team uses the parking garage from the Dutch Embassy in Pretoria as a workshop. Here the team can safely prepare Nuna for the race. Also staff at the embassy is very helpful and help us out where needed. We are very gratefully to stay here and for the coffee that is always at the ready.

Did you know I…

…During the race Nuna drives across the N5. This is a five lane driveway where 300.000 vehicles pass daily?

Did you know II…
..when you reach the right speed at Gerotek you do no longer need to steer due to the slope in the track?
